You should see at least two, sometimes three, entries for your drive depending on how it is formatted. If you are running 10.12 or 10.11 this step is not required as the option is not available. Change the view to Show All Devices instead of the default which is Show Only Volumes. If you are running macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later it is important to change the view in Disk Utility. Once that is done you can proceed with installing macOS and restoring your files and Apps. Do so, select the MacHD volume (or whatever it is called) and format it. If you do it that way, boot from the thumb drive and once you get to the install screen you should have a menu option to launch Disk Utility. If at all possible it could be a bit faster to create a macOS install thumb drive so you don't have to wait on Recovery Mode to download the OS as it installs.
